Jack R. Snider UNL Band Alumni Association Scholarship Winners

Congratulations to Rachel Hoffman and Anna Helzer, the 2017 recipients of the Jack R. Snider UNL Band Alumni Association Scholarship! We were thrilled to receive many donations in 2016 which allowed us to offer two scholarships to these deserving current members of the Cornhusker Marching Band!

About Rachel:

Rachel Hoffman, junior, Elementary Education major

My name is Rachel Hoffman and I am a junior elementary education major from Beatrice, NE. This is my third year in the band- my first two years were spent playing clarinet and this year I am serving as a drum major. I joined the CMB after my sister, who is two years older than me, got me interested. After watching her with the rest of the band, I knew I wanted to be a part of it after I graduated high school. Being in the band has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life. After my time in band is up, I know I will walk away with too many life lessons, memories, and friendships to count.

About Anna:

I am a sophomore Spanish Education major from Aurora, Nebraska. Both of my parents (Gen Weiss and Chris Helzer) as well as my high school band director (Dan Sodomka) were in the CMB in the early ‘90s, so I have grown up hearing stories about the CMB and meeting their band friends. I love my “band family” and being a part of the contagious atmosphere of exhilaration and fun, as well as having the opportunity to start every day making music with my friends. It is wonderful to be part of the Cornhusker Marching Band tradition!

KKPsi to host brunch for Alumni!

On Saturday, September 2nd, from 12-1 p.m., KKPsi will be hosting a brunch for CMB Alumni! It will be held just prior to check in for the reunion, right outside of the Glenn Korff School of Music. This is a great way for current CMB members and CMB alums to meet and for others to catch up with one another! Even if you are unable to march and are attending the game, you are welcome to attend this event prior to rehearsals. Please help me in thanking KKPsi for this wonderful gift on the day of the reunion!

Register before August 20th

Consider giving a gift!

Thank you to those of you have registered; we are excited for this year’s reunion! Don’t delay- the deadline is August 20th at 11:59 p.m., no exceptions!

Did you know that there are many ways you can contribute to the Cornhusker Marching Band?! One way is to include a donation when you register for reunion weekend. Another way is the “donate now” button to the right of our web page. You can donate any amount, any time!

Last year, the Snider Fund had 108 gifts, totaling $9,260. The Lentz fund had 3 gifts, totaling $645. We were able to work with the University Foundation who helped us send out a mailing asking for additional donations. We were very fortunate to have so many donors! Thank you to all who contributed!

If your employer has a matching fund that will match your donations to a qualified nonprofit organization, then you will be able to magnify your contributions to the Band Alumni Association! We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Ask an administrator at your company if they have a matching fund, and if so, how to utilize it.

The Lentz Fund continues to enable us to bring in excellent guest artists like composer Kim Archer. This year, the wind ensemble performed the world premiere of her “Common Threads” at CBDNA. Chal Ragsdale, internationally renowned Percy Grainger specialist, was able to work with the symphonic band while in residence.

In 2016, we were able to present our first Jack R. Snider Band Alumni Association Scholarship to Meghan Coughlin, a current drum major for the CMB. With the generosity of our donors, we are going to be able to award TWO CMB members with scholarships in 2017! Stay tuned for the selection of those recipients right after band camp!
