Richmond receives alumni award from William Jewell College

John W. Richmond, director of the Glenn Korff School of Music, is one of three Achievement Day honorees at his alma mater, William Jewell College.

“As you can imagine, I was surprised, humbled and truly honored to learn I was to be one of three 2015 Achievement Day honorees,” Richmond said. “The list of past honorees is really quite impressive. Jewell’s nickname is the ‘Campus of Achievement’ and their alumni magazine is called ‘Achieve.’ I simply don’t know of alumni recognition for a Jewell alumnus that could mean more to me than the William Jewell College Citation of Achievement.”

Richmond will accept the honor during their Celebration of Achievement March 4-6.

Richmond has been at UNL since 2003. He received his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in music education from William Jewell College in 1977, in addition to a master’s degree from the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri at Kansas City and a Ph.D. degree from Northwestern University.

Remembering Jack Snider

Jack Snider, 93, Lincoln, died Friday, February 20, 2015, of natural causes. Born July 24, 1921 in McCook, Neb., to Harvey Martin and Alice Elizabeth (Amen) Snider. Served as director of bands/marching band and professor of French horn at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 1950-1986. Graduate of UNL with undergrad and masters degrees in music. Also attended Peru State Teachers College and Wilber High School. Served in the United States Army during World War II.

Member of the American Bandmasters Association, Nebraska Bandmasters Association, College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, Phi Kappa Lambda, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Gamma Lambda and Kiwanis International. Awards include: Don Lentz Outstanding Band Master Award 1976, Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award from UNL College of Fine Arts 1995 and Kiwanis Distinguished Service Award 1997.

Survivors: Son, daughter-in-law, Robert and Ann Snider; granddaughter, Erin; grandson, David William Snider and wife Nicole; great-grandsons, Dylan and Nicolas Snider; nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Loyd Snider, Jane Snider, Hervon Snider, and Dorothy (Snider) Price; Beloved wife of 45 years, Mary Alice (Peterson) Snider in 1992, and their son, David Martin Snider in 2006.

Update about Jack Snider

Late this afternoon we learned that UNL Professor Emeritus of Music Jack Snider passed away at 4:20 PM today. We will post information about funeral arrangements as they become known. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Last month, Jack Snider took a turn for the worse. His son, Bob, and daughter-in-law, Annie are both with him. Jack is sleeping most of the time. Jack’s long term memory is still good. He is having some trouble swallowing and had pneumonia. The doctors are talking that he has days to weeks left. Bob is very proud of his Dad and the impact he has had on so many people.

Jack R. Snider, professor of music emeritus and former director of bands, taught at NU for 36 years. Snider was a founder and the first president of the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association, which gives an annual award in his name. Since retiring in 1986, he has been president of the first advisory board for the College of Fine and Performing Arts, president of Lincoln’s Downtown Kiwanis Club and member of the board of advisers for the Association of Concert Bands of America.

Remembering Bill Beave

William Paul Beave II, 69, of Lincoln, died on Sunday, January 11, 2015. He was born on March 31, 1945 in Omaha to William Paul and Esther (Eberspacher) Beave. He was a photographer, musician, and former police officer.

Bill was a former member of the UNL Band Alumni Association’s board of directors for many years. His son, Erin, is also a UNL Band Alumnus.

William is survived by his wife, Penny of Lincoln; son (daughter-in-law), Erin (Mary) Beave of Hastings; granddaughters, Emily and Courtney; father-in-law, Leonard Wever of Lincoln; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services will be held at 11 am Saturday, Jan. 17, at St. Paul United Methodist Church Chapel, 1144 M Street, Lincoln. Memorials are suggested to the UNL Band Alumni Association or St. Paul United Methodist Church. Condolences may be left at www.bmlfh.com.

Cornhusker Marching Band highlights show is Dec. 16

It’s show time as the Cornhusker Marching Band Highlights Concert plays the Lied Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 16. Tickets, available at the Lied Center box office, are $20 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens.

The performance will including the sights and sounds of the Pride of All Nebraska as the band perform halftime shows and the pregame spectacular from the 2014 season.
