Drumline Getting Noticed

The UNL Drumline has been getting a lot of attention recently. If you have been to a football game this year, you may have seen the drumline promote recycling with Pepsi. If you don’t have tickets, here’s the commercial.

Yamaha Percussion Instruments has also used the UNL Drumline in a recent ad seen here.

Message from the President, Steve Pearson

This year’s Alumni Game is the fourth home game of the season, September 21st, versus South Dakota  State. We look forward to seeing as many alumni as possible, participating in a spectacular half-time show and renewing friendships.

Don’t miss the opportunity to connect with other alums by attending the Friday night dinner and post-game party in addition to the game.  Our Friday night dinner continues to grow at Auld Pavilion Ball-room in Antelope Park. This year’s dinner is catered by Dickey’s Barbecue Pit. The meal will include marinated chicken breasts, pulled pork, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, baked potato casserole, drinks, and dessert.  The venue is adjacent to the playground at Antelope Park, making it convenient for alumni with young children. After dinner, we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Cornhusker Band’s appearance in recognition of Johnny Carson on the Kennedy Center Honors..  We will also take the opportunity to hear from faculty from the school of music about the current state of the marching band and the band program at the University of Nebraska.

This year’s post-game party will be held at the Ridnour Room.  It is located in the same building as the Apothecary Lofts where we have held the post-game party for the last five years.  If you are coming  back to Lincoln from out of town, this will give you a great opportunity to check out the phenomenal growth in the Haymarket surrounding the new Pinnacle Bank Arena.  For an advance registration of just $5.00 per person, you can join your fellow alums and guests for Runzas, Valentino’s Pizza, sodas, and water. This un-structured event offers opportunities for socializing, eating, and relaxing.

Please make plans to attend. We look forward to seeing you there.

déjà vu All Over Again at the Capital One Bowl

Tony Falcone, Director, Cornhusker Marching Band

Last year’s trip to Orlando came on the twentieth anniversary of the CMB’s last performance at the Citrus Bowl. This year, it was a much more inauspicious one year anniversary that we celebrated, but it was a terrific trip nonetheless. The feeling of déjà vu was unmistakable as we stayed in the same hotel and rehearsed at the same high school football field as in 2011-12. The students “knew the ropes” as it were and their familiarity with the area helped them enjoy the attractions even more.

This year’s edition of the Orlando Citrus Parade was will be quite memorable, as it poured down rain for the entire time! Characteristically the students didn’t offer a single complaint, and we drew praise from parade officials and audience members alike for having had the forethought to use ponchos. We’ll all stick together, in all kinds of weather! The rain clouds departed for rehearsal that afternoon and we got to enjoy some Florida sunshine. Because of how the schedule worked over the weekend, there were no bowl responsibilities on Sunday. So, after a morning rehearsal, the Band had a free day to enjoy the many attractions Orlando has to offer.

New Years Eve began with a final rehearsal at Colonial High School, followed by gigs at the Capital One Bowl Kickoff Luncheon and an enthusiastic pep rally at Pointe Orlando. We then proceeded to Universal Studios to march through the park in the Macy’s Parade. The students had the remainder of the evening free in the park to ring in the New Year. New Years Day was GAME DAY! We checked out of our hotel then headed for the Citrus Bowl and our match-up with the University of Georgia Bulldogs. After performing for a corporate tailgate and our own Husker Huddle, we proceeded into the stadium for the game. The pregame and halftime performances were very energetic. Our halftime show featured the music of the Rolling Stones.

Following the game we changed into our “civvies”, loaded the semi, ate dinner and bussed back to Sanford Airport for our return to Lincoln. The students had a great time, performed well and exhibited the class that has come to be expected from “The Pride of All Nebraska.”
