Each year, the Russ Swanson Outstanding Band Member Award celebrates one exceptional Nebraska Bands student who exemplifies leadership, dedication, musicianship, and Husker spirit at the highest level.

This is more than an award—it’s a lasting honor recognizing the kind of impact that echoes far beyond the rehearsal room or performance field.

Award recipients are honored with:

  • A $100 award
  • A lifetime membership in the UNL Band Alumni Association
  • A personalized commemorative award
  • Permanent recognition on a plaque displayed in the Westbrook Music Building

Their name becomes part of the ongoing story of Nebraska Bands excellence—seen by students, alumni, and visitors for years to come.

Honoring Russ Swanson’s Legacy

In 2012, this award was renamed in honor of Verlyn Russell “Russ” Swanson, a deeply devoted musician, veteran, and lifelong supporter of Nebraska Bands.

Russ was a French horn player in the Cornhusker Marching Band and proudly performed in the legendary 1941 Rose Bowl Band. His life of service extended far beyond music—he also served in World War II as a member of an air bomber crew.

Russ remained deeply connected to Nebraska Bands throughout his life. He was a charter member of the Band Alumni Association in 1974 and served on its board for decades, stepping down just a year before his passing in 2011. Alongside his wife, he was a tireless and passionate volunteer, supporting the work and mission of the BAA in countless ways.

Today, his name represents commitment, service, and lifelong devotion to Nebraska Bands.

A Tradition That Continues to Evolve

In 2020, the award was updated from “Outstanding Bandsman” to “Outstanding Band Member” to reflect the inclusive language used across the Nebraska Bands program and to align with contemporary standards throughout the Big Ten Conference.

This change ensures the award continues to honor excellence in a way that welcomes and represents every member of the Nebraska Bands community.

The Russ Swanson Outstanding Band Member Award stands as a powerful reminder: Nebraska Bands is built not only on performance, but on people—past, present, and future—who give their very best to something larger than themselves.
