Remembering Jim Condon

James L. Condon

James L. Condon, age 70 years, passed away January 14, 2018 in Republican City. Jim was born on July 6, 1947, in Aurora, to John and Hazel (Olsen) Condon. He graduated from Aurora High School Class of 65 and University of Nebraska with a Degree in Chemical Engineering. Every year he enjoyed marching with the UNL alumni band. In 1970, after graduating from UNL, Jim and Shirley Moller were married and they spent 47 years together.

Jim served as a military intelligence officer in the United States Army, four years on active duty, and ultimately retired after 30 years as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Reserves and National Guard. In recent years he was actively involved with ROTC and the Pershing Rifle alumni to encourage increased student participation in these important programs.

Jim had recently celebrated 40 years at the job he loved with the engineering and design firm Olsson Associates where he served as Vice President, Public Relations in the area of water and wastewater. He had significant volunteer service and involvement in the Water Environment Federation including the Public Communications and Outreach Committee, Chair, Stockholm Junior Water Prize, and the National Boy Scouts of America Jamboree. He was also a member of the Nebraska Water Environment Association and the American Water Works Association.

Jim loved being with people and that carried from his professional face-to-face interaction with clients to a very full social life. He was known by so many for his times with the Eagles, Elks, American Legion, VFW, and Old Dominion Boat Club. He was an avid supporter of statewide shuffleboard and pool tournaments and activities. Jim also had a passion for the outdoors and loved fishing, boating and golf.

Jim is survived by his wife Shirley of Lincoln, daughter Micki (husband Bill) Fowler of Lincoln, son Michael (wife Julie) Condon of Portland, OR, 2 grandchildren Starr Fowler and Kinsley Condon, sisters Sharon Nell of Satellite Beach, FL and Cindy (husband John) Powers of Kapolei, HI, mother-in-law Marilyn Moller Brennan, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials are suggested to University of Nebraska Foundation/ROTC Stockholm Jr. Water Prize.

Russ Swanson Outstanding Bandsman Award Presented

The 2017 Russ Swanson Outstanding Bandsman Award was presented this year to Paige DeDecker! This award was renamed in 2012 in Russ Swanson’s honor. Russ was a french horn player in the marching band and was a part of the 1941 Rose Bowl Band. He was also a WWII veteran serving on an air bomber crew. He was a charter member of the Band Alumni Association in 1974 and was on the board until a little over a year before he died in 2011. He and his wife were dedicated volunteers for activities of the BAA board.

Paige DeDecker is a percussionist from Flower Mound, Texas. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Percussion Performance at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). She has been in the Cornhusker Marching Band all four years during her time at UNL, and she has had the privilege of being rank leader for the Front Ensemble for three years and the section leader for the Drumline during her senior year.

She has also had the opportunity to perform in UNL’s Wind Ensemble under the direction of Carolyn Barber and Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Dave Hall and Tony Falcone, which most recently performed at the 2016 Percussive Arts Society International Convention as a winner of the International Percussion Ensemble Competition’s Call for Tapes. Paige was also a member of the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps Front Ensemble from 2014 to 2016, and the percussion section was the recipient of the Fred Sanford High Percussion Award in 2014 and 2016.

After graduation, Paige will attend graduate school to continue her study with percussion performance, and ultimately, she hopes to perform in a chamber ensemble or work for a nonprofit arts organization.

Congratulations, Paige!

Story Spotlight Series!

This year, we will be collecting stories, from current CMB members, as well as from alumni, in an effort to connect the band community more, as well as share memories with each other. Recently, a story was submitted by a current CMB member, Geli Gonzalez. I hope it brings a smile to your face, and brings you some happiness during this week.

I have so many great memories from CMB, but what happened at our last home football game against the Rutgers has struck a chord in my heart. We had just gotten back in the stands from halftime and a young boy and his mother were coming up the stands. He stopped suddenly in front of Colleen Hacker (front left, white sunglasses) and wanted her to play for him. She gladly accepted his request and played a bit of one of our fight songs, which brought him such excitement. I was smiling widely throughout the whole interaction and when him and his mother were moving up the stairs, I waved and said hi to him. I wasn’t expecting him to stop and ask me (far right, sunglasses) to play, even identifying my instrument (the clarinet). I went ahead and played the melody to Dear Old Nebraska U for him, and he asked Trenton Buhr (center saxophone) to play for him too. It was honestly the best part of that whole football game, and I’m so happy I got to share this moment with some of my fellow CMB members. This little boy reminded me how much music can make an impact on people and bring such joy into one moment.

Alumni Band Uniform Change!

After speaking with many alumni during and after the game this year, we have decided to make a slight change to the alumni band uniform. Red shirts are still a must, but we’re going to require black shorts or pants (skirts or skorts are fine, too). Footwear must be a comfortable, athletic shoe, but does not necessarily need to be white (no flip flops, please). We hope you are already making plans to come back for the 2018 Alumni Reunion! We will let you know in late January/early February what game the Athletic and Band Departments decide upon!

About Rachel:

Rachel Hoffman, junior, Elementary Education major

My name is Rachel Hoffman and I am a junior elementary education major from Beatrice, NE. This is my third year in the band- my first two years were spent playing clarinet and this year I am serving as a drum major. I joined the CMB after my sister, who is two years older than me, got me interested. After watching her with the rest of the band, I knew I wanted to be a part of it after I graduated high school. Being in the band has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life. After my time in band is up, I know I will walk away with too many life lessons, memories, and friendships to count.

About Anna:

I am a sophomore Spanish Education major from Aurora, Nebraska. Both of my parents (Gen Weiss and Chris Helzer) as well as my high school band director (Dan Sodomka) were in the CMB in the early ‘90s, so I have grown up hearing stories about the CMB and meeting their band friends. I love my “band family” and being a part of the contagious atmosphere of exhilaration and fun, as well as having the opportunity to start every day making music with my friends. It is wonderful to be part of the Cornhusker Marching Band tradition!
